Spotlight on Murton Trust

It's been a little while since we did a Spotlight feature, where we focus on a local group or organisation that are doing great things in the Angus community. Today we are shining this light on Murton Trust, or, if you have children and a penchant for home baking you will likely know it as Murton Farm Tearoom and Nature Reserve!

Murton Trust is a charity with an educational and environmental purpose which manages a thriving Nature Reserve, Visitor Farm and Tearoom set in 100 acres.

Situated on a former quarry just outside Forfar, Murton Trust takes it's name from the farm that was originally located there in the 18th Century. However bronze age relics that have been found there show that inhabitants go back much further than that!

Rich in history, the Murton Trust is also rich in all things Nature - which their mission sets out to maintain and establish.

Through the abundant Nature Reserve and thriving farm, the Trust are able to meet their environmental and educational aims by encouraging access to the outdoors for all to enjoy.

They also organise training for young people from local schools, giving them the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and develop skills that will help them step into future careers.

Asides from the farm and tearoom that can be enjoyed, along with a gentle meander through the nature reserve, the Murton Trust also hosts a variety of social and educational events for the public to enjoy ; including an outdoor tots group, organised health walks, skill sharing workshops AND seasonal family events.

Of course we must also mention the most recent addition to arrive at Murton, made possible by the generosity of some local businesses and volunteers.- a new zip wire!

Murton nature reserve is one of the many places affected by the extreme weather and heavy rains of last Winter. They experienced heavy flooding in many previously unaffected areas, which you can see an example of in the photos above.

Through the Change for Good Funding they received through the Angus Climate Hub, they have been building raised walkways using local timber to navigate the flooded areas. This means people will still be able to connect and enjoy Nature, despite the changing weather and landscape. A fantastic demonstration of resilience and adaptability right there!

If you haven't already visited Murton , then we encourage you to do so.... and if you are not keen to 'fly' on the new zip wire then you can most certainly enjoy all the other birds that you will spot while there (especially the sand martins - but be quick before they head off on their travels to warmer climes!).

You can keep up to date with their busy calendar of events and activities HERE.

And follow their regular shares from behind the scenes over on their Socials : facebook and instagram.

SPOTLIGHT FEATURE - There's a lot happening around Angus where people are getting together and doing great things with and for their community. We want to shine a SPOTLIGHT, sharing and celebrating what is happening in the wider community. We hope this may inspire you to get involved, connect with others, learn a new skill or even set up your own group!
