Welcome to another Spotlight feature where we take the opportunity to share a snippet of the great things going on in your community that you may not know about!
Today's Spotlight is shining on the LandXSea (Land by Sea) Film Festival , which is a charity registered and volunteer run event, based in Montrose.
The Film Fest was hosted for the first time in 2023 and due to its huge success is set to be a yearly event, with 2024's dates written in the diary ( Sept 13 -15th ), and a program of films and community activities all lined up.
Would you believe this first ever climate focused film festival in Scotland was sparked by a meeting of 2 people that both hailed from Scotland but met in San Francisco?!
It just so happened that one of these people was BAFTA award winning filmmaker, Anthony Baxter, (you will likely have heard of his film: You've Been Trumped). The other was Rachel Caplan who was running the San Francisco Green Film Festival.
With a shared passion for film and the environment, the tiny seeds of an idea were able to grow to full bloom when The Montrose Playhouse opened its doors in 2021 (which we must add has a fascinating and incredible story of its own - read all about it here ).
The perfect home for the festival had been found!
The feelings behind the Landxsea Film festival is that there are so many important and crucial films being made around the world but they are not easily accessible . Hosting this event would change that, providing a window into the wider world and along with it an opening for climate conversations.
When put to the local community of Montrose they clearly felt the same with the contribution of many local volunteers and business sponsorships making the first LandxSea Film Fest possible.
For the second year of the LandxSea Film fest, the Angus Climate Hub is delighted to be able to play a small part in supporting the running costs of the event through our Change for Good Fund.
We can't wait to come along and be part of this fantastic experience.
We've been told on good authority that you can expect to encounter a ' treasure trove of films, each one reflecting the beauty, resilience, and challenges of our coastal environments'. Also there will be an opportunity for 'stirring dialogues with filmmakers and changemakers that offer fresh perspectives and insights'.
There will also be a host of social events and family-friendly activities that will make this this a fun weekend for everyone including the Film Fest yearly dook and an Eco Fair in the Mall.
Catch a small example of what to expect by watching the powerful film trailer from 2023 below. ( 2024 will be coming soon! )
